Technology has transformed the world in countless ways, but for me, the most life-changing invention has been screen readers. These incredible tools have allowed blind and visually impaired individuals like me to fully engage with computers, smartphones, and other digital devices.
Before screen readers, accessing information independently was a challenge. When having to depend on someone sighted to read a book, newspaper, signs, menus at restaurants, and so much more, was not convenient. However now, I can browse the internet, write blog posts, check emails, send text messages, and do so much more—all through the power of text-to-speech and braille displays. The ability to navigate websites, read books, and even engage in online education has given me a level of independence that previous generations could only dream of.
However, the advancements have not stopped there. With the rise of artificial intelligence, accessibility has taken another giant leap forward. One of the most remarkable developments is AI-powered image descriptions. For years, pictures were a mystery to me—I could hear people describe them, but I never had the ability to intuitively know what was in an image on my own. Now, AI can describe photos, giving me details about colors, people, objects, and even facial expressions. This has been a meaningful change, allowing me to engage with visual content in ways that were previously impossible.
Technology continues to evolve, and I can only imagine what the future holds. But for now, I am grateful for these inventions that have opened doors, broken down barriers, and made the world more inclusive for the blind and visually impaired.
