Ramadan Islam Facts – Day 8: The Importance of Intentions (Niyyah) in Fasting

In Islam, intentions (Niyyah) are the foundation of every act of worship, including fasting. Simply not eating or drinking isn’t what makes a fast valid—it must be done with the intention of worshiping Allah.

What Does Niyyah Mean?

Niyyah means having a sincere intention in your heart before starting an act of worship. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“Actions are judged by intentions, and everyone will get what was intended.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

Do You Have to Say the Niyyah Out Loud?

No, Niyyah is a matter of the heart. You don’t have to verbally say it, but before Suhoor, you should have the firm intention in your heart that you are fasting for the sake of Allah.

When Should You Make the Intention for Fasting?

For obligatory fasts (like Ramadan), the intention should be made before Fajr (dawn). The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Whoever does not intend to fast before dawn, there is no fast for him.” (Tirmidhi)

For voluntary fasts, you can make the intention anytime before noon, as long as you haven’t eaten or drunk anything.

What’s a Simple Intention for Fasting?

You can say in your heart:
“I intend to fast today for the sake of Allah during this blessed month of Ramadan.”

🌙 Having the right intention makes our fasting more meaningful and rewarding! What’s your personal reason for loving Ramadan? 😊
