This past Saturday, I was supposed to run a 5K race. Since the event was about an hour away, I decided to head to Sacramento on Friday and stay the night. Everything was set—bags packed, guide runner confirmed, and the kids were going to stay overnight with the nanny.
But then, as we were driving to Sacramento, I got a call from my guide runner. “The race is canceled,” she told me. Just like that, the whole reason for the trip was gone.
Oh well. We were already on our way, so why turn back? With the kids taken care of, we decided to make the most of our unexpected free weekend.
After arriving in Sacramento, we went out for dinner, not really thinking much about where we were going. We just wanted a good meal after the drive. But somehow, we accidentally walked into a high-end restaurant—the kind of place with dim lighting, elegant décor, and a menu where you glance at the prices a little longer than usual. At first, it felt a bit weird, like we were out of place. But after a while, I started to feel more comfortable and just enjoyed the experience.
And wow, what a dinner it was. I had a veal tomahawk with Brussels sprouts, potatoes, and onions. I sipped on a ginger beer, and for dessert, I had an absolutely delicious churro tres leches cake. It was one of those meals that you savor every bite of.
After dinner, walking around wasn’t an option since it was raining, so we just checked into the hotel and relaxed for the rest of the night. Sometimes, a quiet night in is just what you need.
Saturday: Rainy Adventures & A Great Breakfast
When Saturday rolled around, we went to a diner downstairs and had an amazing breakfast. I had a breakfast burrito with a mocha coffee—which, honestly, wasn’t that great—but the pecan maple scone more than made up for it.
Even though it was still raining, we decided to head out and explore along the waterfront. There’s something peaceful about walking in the rain, even if you end up completely soaked. We wandered around for a while, enjoying the fresh air and the quiet of a misty morning, before finally calling it quits and heading home to dry off and wait for the kids to return.
Sunday: A Relaxed Reset & Meal Planning with AI
Now it’s Sunday, and we’re just hanging out around the house. It’s been a good weekend—unexpected, but good. Today, I’ve been focused on getting things organized for the week ahead. I actually used ChatGPT to create a meal plan, which has made grocery shopping and meal prep surprisingly easy. It’s been interesting gathering the ingredients, seeing the meals laid out, and figuring out how to structure everything. Definitely a task made easier with a little AI assistance!
All in all, this weekend didn’t go as planned, but it turned out to be a refreshing break from routine. Sometimes, the best memories come from the unexpected.
